Millstones

Millstones make fabulous statuary bases, garden or patio tables, stepping stones, fountains, water features or simply stand alone as unique garden accessories. The majority of our millstones were found in rural China, are carved from granite and possess a unique furrowing and patina. Our millstones range in size from 14 inches to more than 6 feet in diameter. The largest ones can be repurposed as table tops or as a medallion stone in a patio or driveway.  They  have a wonderful patina as a result of both age and wear, and would be excellent as a fountain or statuary base, water feature, or simply standing alone as a garden focal point.

Granite millstones have been in use for crushing grains and corn since well before Biblical times.  They were often made in pairs.  The bottom stone or "bedstone" was stationary while the "runner" stone above it turned and crushed the grain.  The shapes of the two stones forced the ground flour out to the edges where it was collected.  There is a small hole on the surface of the wheels where the miller turned one stone on top of the other.
